Interview Tips
With effective preparation you can succeed in your interviews. These tips can help you in making the right impression to potential employers:
Research – It is vital to find out as much about the company as possible. Company information is usually widely available on the internet, if not ask the company to send you a brochure or speak to an informed person who knows about the company.
Make a list of questions you can ask during or after the interview, this will prove you have a genuine interest in the position and will highlight your organisational skills.
Check out where the interview venue is so you may plan your journey to arrive in good time before the interview.
Dress Code: It is usually advisable to dress conservatively for the occasion avoiding clothes that make too much of a brash statement. A good option would be a clean smart suit.
First Impressions – Make sure you arrive to your interview at least 10/15 minutes early. When your interviewer arrives, smile, be enthusiastic, shake their hand firmly and maintain eye contact. Avoid making negative comments about previous employers especially when you are asked why you are looking to change jobs. Keep it positive and explain you are looking to develop your skills in new areas.
The interview should be a 2 way discussion, listen to what the interviewer is saying and answer questions clearly and concisely. Be prepared to back up statements you make about yourself with your experience. Ask questions about the nature of the role and the company. If you can’t think of anything to say use your list of questions to get the conversation flowing again.
When the interview has finished, emphasise how keen you are and enquire what the next step is.
